So you have a Shy Child?

Children get labelled as being shy, as you understand the term and what it means, there is nothing wrong with being shy child. Parents worry that shyness can be a characteristic of children who have low self-esteem, this is not necessarily true. Shyness is the feeling of apprehension, lack of comfort, or awkwardness especially when a person is around other people or new people.

Shyness can be Good

Not everyone is a boisterous outgoing extrovert; the world consists of different types of personalities and people. Shy people can simply be observers, people watchers, and extremely good listeners; warm loving individuals who are sought out as friends.

Shyness is not a disease or something to be apologetic about. There is nothing wrong with being shy. Shy people have an inner peace that shines. A shy child with a high self-esteem, one who makes eye-to-eye contact, and is polite, respectful with good behavior is a welcomed and a pleasure to be around

When Shyness can be a problem

When shyness is a manifestation of problems, such as depression, sadness then it is negative for the well-being of this child. If the child avoids eye-to-eye contact and has behavioral issues besides shyness then it is a matter of concern for the parents.

What should you do?

You need to appreciate that you are fortunate to be blessed with a deep caring reserved child who simply takes time to connect with strangers. Thus, Your child takes time to integrate with new social settings and relationships. Hence, Your child is a happy child. Also, You need to hug your child. The world will be a nicer gentler place because of this child.

If at any time you feel that your child’s shyness is impacting their quality of life, or that it is not shyness, but suffering from depression or some other issue you should consult a qualified child psychologist.
