Frequently, I am asked if there is any cure for depression without the intervention of a doctor. Fortunately, depression is curable. In case the individual is suffering from a mild case of depression they can take steps to address it themselves. Addressing you depression by yourself requires a lot of will power and mental strength.
What is depression? In a layman’s terms, depression is a strong feeling of helplessness, due to which a person is not able to function normally at home or at work. Technically speaking depression is when a person feel sad, anxious, empty, hopeless, helpless, worthless, guilty, irritable, angry, ashamed or restless. They may lose interest in activities that were once pleasurable, experience loss of appetite or overeating, have problems concentrating, remembering details or making decisions, experience relationship difficulties and may contemplate, attempt or commit suicide. Insomnia, excessive sleeping, fatigue, aches, pains, digestive problems or reduced energy may also be present.
Here are a few techniques to work on your path to healing yourself of depression:
Start a routine: Make it a habit to wake up, and go to bed on the same time, make a schedule and stick to it
Set Goals: Start out be setting simple goals and achieving them. A goal could be to cook a favorite dish, go for a walk, or to take your bath on time
Exercise: Going for a walk, going to the gym, or doing stretching exercises or yoga on a regular basis
Eat Healthy: Remove junk food, soft drinks and processed foods from your diet, introduce fresh and unprocessed foods into your diet
Get enough Sleep: If you body requires7- 8 hours of sleep daily, ensure that you do so
Take on Responsibilities: Be response for someone or something, for example taking the family pet for a walk, watering the plants etc
Eradicate Negative thoughts: Whenever you mind wanders towards negative thoughts, consciously change your thoughts
Do something New: Learn something new, such as salsa dancing, painting, playing an instrument, or singing
Have Fun: Furthermore, plan a fun activity, go shopping, go to watch a movie, go and visit a friend or family member
Consult an Experienced Psychologist: Visit a professional, they will be able to guide you on what your can do, and advise you if you need medication such as antidepressant pills.
