An important thing to remember is the difference between a good learner and a good student. A good student will excel in school by getting all “A”s, but a better learner will excel in life.
Talk to your child,
Discuss what you read in the newspaper, things you see in day to day life. Keep that channel of communication open with your child
Have your own interests and hobbies,
Expose your child to your hobbies, but don’t mandate them to have the same hobbies as you
You should Read books,
Don’t force your kid to read, let them emulate you.
Exposure, take your child to lots of different exposures,
The zoo, museums, rock concerts, theatre, and dance amongst others. Anyone exposure could trigger a lifelong passion for learning.
Play games that involve thinking with your child,
Games like chess, scrabble even monopoly. Help them understand the thought/thinking process not winning. This is teaching them strategic thinking.
You are your child’s best teacher,
Not the school, not the teachers in school, not the tutors that come home. You are the best tutor. Simple games while you drive around, such as counting the number of black cars on the road, houses, bicycles etc. Tune your child’s sense of observation.
Don’t over pack your child schedule,
Your child needs free time to think, to explore, to discover. Allow your child free time to play, roam around, and daydream.
Focus on making your child a good learner beside a good student.
